September Foraging in the UK: Wisdom in the Hedgerows

September feels golden in the South of England. The light softens, mornings carry a chill, and the hedgerows move from abundance to harvest. This is the month of gathering properly — not casually picking, but preparing for what comes next.

Apples are everywhere now. Wild trees along footpaths, old orchards, garden overhangs. Some will be sharp, some sweet, most imperfect — and perfect for crumbles, chutneys and drying. Alongside them, blackberries remain plentiful early in the month, though they begin to soften as the season progresses.

Deep purple clusters of elderberries hang heavily from trees. Traditionally used in syrups and wines, elderberries have long been valued in British herbal folklore as a winter ally. They must always be cooked before consumption.

In hedgerows, bright red rosehips begin to form, rich in vitamin C and traditionally gathered after the first frost for syrups and teas.

Underfoot, you may find fallen hazelnuts, finally ripening and ready to harvest before squirrels claim them.

Woodland fungi flourish in September’s damp conditions.

Chanterelles, cep (porcini) and puffballs may all appear depending on habitat. As always, correct identification is essential — mushrooms demand knowledge, not guesswork.

September teaches foresight.

It asks: what will you wish you’d gathered when winter arrives?

Many people love the idea of seasonal living, but without guidance it becomes reactive.

Fruit spoils. Opportunities are missed. Confidence wavers.
