May Foraging in the UK: When Growth Gets Real

May is generous. The countryside moves from tentative spring to confident abundance, and the hedgerows begin to fill with colour, scent, and promise. If April was about cleansing and awakening, May is about vitality.
The unmistakable bloom of elderflower begins toward the end of the month in the South. Creamy clusters hang heavy with fragrance — perfect for cordials and infusions. Alongside them, hawthorn blossom (Mayflower) fills the air. In folklore, hawthorn is deeply connected to Beltane and protection.
On the woodland floor, wild garlic still thrives early in the month, while cow parsley creates delicate white clouds along paths (be cautious — always double check against poisonous lookalikes like hemlock).
Herbally, you’ll find cleavers (goosegrass) climbing and sticking — traditionally used as a gentle lymphatic tonic. Plantain leaves are also plentiful, valued for their soothing properties.
Early fruits may include cultivated strawberries and the first small wild varieties in sheltered spots. Meanwhile, fungi like morels may appear in specific habitats, though they require experienced identification.

May teaches expansion. It invites you outdoors. It encourages you to gather, but also to observe. Many people feel a burst of energy now — but without direction, that energy can scatter.
