June Foraging in the UK: Standing in Fullness

June is high summer in waiting. The light stretches late into the evening, the air carries warmth even after sunset, and the hedgerows begin to feel generous rather than tentative. If spring felt like awakening, June feels like arrival.
This is one of the most abundant and rewarding months for UK foraging, particularly in the South of England.

In sheltered hedgerows and woodland edges, wild strawberries begin to ripen. Tiny compared to cultivated varieties, but intensely sweet, they are a reminder that flavour often comes in small, overlooked forms. Close by, you’ll still find the last of the elderflowers early in the month — perfect for cordials, vinegars, or drying for winter teas. Traditionally, elder has been regarded as a protective tree in British folklore, never to be cut without permission.
Along grassy verges and meadows, meadowsweet starts to flower toward the end of June. Its creamy blossoms carry a sweet, almond-like scent and were historically strewn on floors during midsummer celebrations. Meadowsweet was also one of the original ingredients in early forms of aspirin, long used to soothe discomfort.
Herbally, June offers yarrow, flowering in delicate white clusters. Known in folklore as a plant of protection and divination, yarrow has been gathered for centuries for both practical and ritual use. Plantain remains abundant and is a wonderful example of how the “weeds” beneath our feet are often deeply useful.
As for nuts, this is the quiet stage — green hazelnuts begin forming but are not yet ready. Observing them now teaches patience and seasonal awareness.
Fungi begin appearing more reliably with warmth and rain. Chicken of the Woods may grow on oak trees, bright and unmistakable, though it must always be harvested with confident identification. Early chanterelles can begin appearing toward the end of the month in suitable woodland habitats.

But here’s the deeper question: do you know what you’re looking for — or do you just hope you’ll recognise it when you see it?
Many people feel drawn to forage in summer. They love the idea of it. But uncertainty stops them. Fear of misidentification. Not knowing what’s in season. Worrying about getting it wrong.
Foraging is a skill built month by month. It isn’t about one walk with a basket — it’s about understanding patterns.
Inside our Patreon community, we guide you through each month in detail. You’ll receive expanded seasonal foraging sheets, printable identification pages, folklore deep-dives, sustainable harvesting guidance, and simple seasonal recipes that build your confidence gradually.
Instead of feeling unsure, you’ll know:
• What’s in season
• Where to look
• How to identify safely
• How to use what you gather
June is abundant — but abundance without knowledge creates hesitation.
If you want to move through summer feeling capable, connected, and grounded in the British landscape, this is your invitation.
