What is the Festival Yule? AKA Christmas.

A Guide to Celebration of Giving and Gratitude

What is Yule? As the nights grow long and winter settles in, the world around us slows and turns inward. This is the time of Yule, the ancient festival of the Winter Solstice, celebrated between 20th and 23rd December. While many of us know this season as Christmas, Yule reminds us of deeper truths: the power of gratitude, reflection, and renewal.

Why is Yule so Special?

Yule marks the shortest day and the longest night of the year, when the Sun is at its farthest point from the Earth. From this moment onward, daylight slowly returns—a powerful symbol of hope, rebirth, and new beginnings. Spiritually, Yule invites us to reflect on the past year, set intentions, and plant the seeds for personal growth. Farmers’ Almanac traditions even suggest preparing your garden or planning what you wish to nurture in the months ahead—a beautiful reminder that cycles of life are mirrored in nature.

Yule and the Zodiac

Capricorn season, under which the Solstice falls, encourages discipline, grounding, and long-term planning. It’s the perfect time to reflect on your goals, release what no longer serves you, and consciously decide what to invite into your life in the coming year.

Celebrating Yule: Practices for Reflection and Growth

You can make Yule meaningful in your own life with simple, intentional practices: light a candle to symbolise returning light, meditate with crystals such as Garnet, Citrine, or Clear Quartz, or journal your reflections and intentions. Thoughtful rituals like these help transform this seasonal pause into a powerful moment of personal empowerment and spiritual clarity.
