Achillea millefolium, known as Yarrow, is named after the Greek hero Achilles, who used it to heal his soldiers’ wounds during the Trojan War. Yarrow, also called "Militaris" for its historical medicinal uses in warfare, is a small herb from the daisy family with a bitter, aromatic scent. In Chinese philosophy, it symbolizes the balance of yin and yang, making it sacred in I Ching divination.
Traditionally, Yarrow is a versatile herb for treating inflammation, colds, flu, and urinary tract infections. It acts as a digestive tonic, soothes cramps, and helps reduce fever by promoting sweating. It is a powerful styptic, stopping both internal and external bleeding, and can regulate menstrual flow and ease menopause symptoms. Externally, it heals wounds, rashes, acne, and eczema, and promotes hair growth while preventing dandruff. Yarrow also supports varicose veins and revitalizes tired legs.
Magically, Yarrow is used for protection, courage, and chakra balancing, especially cleansing the third eye. It can aid in love divination, attuning to the balance of yin and yang, and strengthening bonds of friendship. Yarrow’s multifaceted properties make it a cherished herb in both practical and spiritual practices.
