Mugwort, a humble herb often overlooked as a weed, is one of the oldest cultural companion plants, revered across the Northern Hemisphere. Known as the "mother of all healing herbs," Mugwort has deep ties to sacred practices throughout history. Its genus name, Artemisia, connects it to Artemis, the Greek Moon Goddess, protector of women and children. Historically, Mugwort was used in rituals, including the midsummer solstice celebration where it was worn as a protective belt by Thor. This herb was also known for its soothing properties, especially for weary travelers, and was used to ease leg fatigue and refresh tired feet.
Mugwort’s healing benefits include treating digestive issues, soothing the female reproductive system, and easing menstrual discomfort. It also has warming and diaphoretic qualities, helpful in combating colds. However, it should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Additionally, Mugwort has insect-repelling properties, once used to protect wardrobes from moths. In magical practices, it’s worn for protection, hung above doorways, and used in dream rituals to attract good spirits. Revered by Native Americans, Mugwort was integral in cleansing rituals and sweatlodges, embodying both healing and protective powers.
