Angelica archangelica, often called Archangel or Garden Angelica, is a powerful herb with a rich history of protective and healing properties. Native to the far north of Lapland and Siberia, Angelica was once highly revered in Europe, especially during the Black Death, for its protective powers against disease. According to legend, the Holy Ghost revealed its abilities to a monk in a dream, and doctors carried the root to guard against infection. Though less commonly used today, Angelica remains a potent tonic, particularly for digestive health, colds, and flu-like infections.
In magical traditions, Angelica is considered a powerful protector, shielding against evil and disease. It is also believed to promote courage, calm anxiety, and provide strength and guidance, much like a guardian angel. Angelica’s historical use includes its presence in herbal liqueurs such as vermouth and chartreuse, and it was once used to curb alcohol cravings. Despite its decline in use, this herb still offers many benefits as a general tonic, making it a valuable addition to herbal remedies and health practices.
